とても有名な詩なのでご存じかもしれませんが、まだ知らない方のためにご紹介いたします。
苦しみ、悲しみ、困難や絶望の淵にある時に、どんなにか慰めと癒し、励まし、心にリアリティをもって迫ってくる詩です。

『Footprint』
One night I dreamed a dream.
As I was walking along the beach with my Lord.
Across the dark sky flashed scenes from my life.
For each scene, I noticed two sets of footprints in the sand,
One belonging to me and one to my Lord.
After the last scene of my life flashed before me,
I looked back at the footprints in the sand.
I noticed that at many times along the path of my life,
especially at the very lowest and saddest times,
there was only one set of footprints.
This really troubled me, so I asked the Lord about it.
“Lord, you said once I decided to follow you,
You’d walk with me all the way.
But I noticed that during the saddest and most troublesome times of my life,
there was only one set of footprints.
I don’t understand why, when I needed You the most, You would leave me.”
He whispered, “My precious child, I love you and will never leave you
Never, ever, during your trials and testings.
When you saw only one set of footprints,
It was then that I carried you.”

『足跡』
ある夜、私は夢を見た。
私は、主とともに、なぎさを歩いていた。
暗い夜空に、これまでの私の人生が映し出された。
どの光景にも、砂の上に二人のあしあとが残されていた。
一つは私のあしあと、もう一つは主のあしあとであった。
これまでの人生の最後の光景が映し出されたとき、
私は砂の上のあしあとに目を留めた。
そこには一つのあしあとしかなかった。
私の人生でいちばんつらく、悲しいときだった。
このことがいつも私の心を乱していたので、私はその悩みについて主にお尋ねした。
「主よ。私があなたに従うと決心したとき、あなたは、すべての道において私とともに歩み、私と語り合ってくださると約束されました。
それなのに、私の人生の一番辛いとき、一人のあしあとしかなかったのです。
一番あなたを必要としたときに、あなたがなぜ私を捨てられたのか、私にはわかりません」
主はささやかれた。
「私の大切な子よ。私はあなたを愛している。
あなたを決して捨てたりはしない。
ましてや、苦しみや試みのときに。
あしあとが一つだったとき、
私はあなたを背負って歩いていた。」

この詩は長く ‘作者未詳’ とされてきましたが、1964年にマーガレット・Ｆ・パワーズというアメリカ人女性によって書かれたということが、それからかなりたって、病院の集中治療室に入っていた彼女の夫ポールによって明らかにされました。
